Homemade compost: how to make it from kitchen scraps

By Fazendinha Retrô Team · Published on

Plant scraps from the kitchen can become compost when they break down in the right conditions. Set aside peels and trimmings and combine them with dry material to keep the mix airy.

What to set aside

In a typical home compost bin, start with raw vegetable scraps and dry leaves. Leave out meat, dairy and fatty foods, which cause odors and attract animals.

When to use it in the garden

Wait until the material is dark and even, smells like earth and has no recognizable fresh pieces. Mix mature compost into the potting mix according to the crop.
